Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects CD4+ T cells and causes immunodeficiency in patients if left untreated. p24 is a capsid protein that forms the conical core of the HIV virion that encases viral RNA and enzymes. This protein is clinically significant because it one of the earliest detectable markers of HIV infection.
