Antibodies to Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein (MOG) are immunological markers associated with inflammatory demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system. MOG is a glycoprotein located on the outer surface of the myelin sheath and oligodendrocytes in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Autoimmune responses directed against MOG may result in inflammation and myelin damage.MOG antibodies are most commonly associated with MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), a disorder that may present with optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), or other demyelinating syndromes. Unlike MBP antibodies, MOG antibodies are considered relatively specific diagnostic markers and are typically detected using cell-based immunoassays. MOG antibodies are generally distinct from Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies associated with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and from the autoimmune profile seen in Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
