MCF7 is one of the most widely used human breast cancer cell lines in cancer biology and drug discovery research. It was originally established in 1970 from the pleural effusion of a patient with metastatic breast adenocarcinoma and has since become a standard in vitro model for studying hormone-responsive breast cancer.
