Placental-derived growth factor (PIGF) is a dimeric glycoprotein showing a high degree of sequence similarity to VEGF. There are two alternative splicing forms of the PIGF primary transcript; PIGF-1 and PIGF-2. It is expressed in a number of tissues, such as thyroid, lung and placenta. PIGF is an angiogenic factor that is able to induce angiogenesis in vivo and stimulate the migration and proliferation of endothelial cells in vitro. Receptors for PlGF include products of the fms-like tyrosine kinase (flt-1).
