Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a small secreted protein which induces the differentiation and survival of particular target neurons (nerve cells). NGF has recently been identified as a novel angiogenic molecule, which exerts a variety of effects in the cardiovascular system and on endothelial cells. NGF may contribute to maintenance, survival, and function of endothelial cells by autocrine and/or paracrine mechanisms. β-NGF is structurally related to BDNF, NT-3 and NT-4. β-NGF is a potent neurotrophic factor that signals through its receptor β-NGFR, and plays a crucial role in the development and preservation of the sensory and sympathetic nervous systems. β-NGF also acts as a growth and differentiation factor for B lymphocytes and enhances B cell survival.
